The tenderness of the hard world

--------- Preface to Patten's short story "The Covered Door"

Xu Lianjun (Dean and PhD Supervisor, School of Arts, Yangtze University)

The writer Peng Dingwang will publish a new collection of novels, The Hidden Door, asking me to write a few sentences in order, and I promise with admiration. When he was about to write, he hesitated, and he didn't know what to write. I met Brother Dingwang halfway through my life. I did n’t know much about why he buried his hair and wrote the novel for a lifetime. I have read a lot of the novels he has published, but he has n’t made a comprehensive understanding of the artistic context of his novels. Research, it was too frivolous to promise to write a preface for his new work. What a regret! But I was unwilling to keep my word.

When I was young, I had the urge to be a writer, so I read a lot of novels from ancient times to modern times, and I still remember a lot of novelist names: Balzac, Hugo, Stendhal, Flaubert, Maupassant, Dickens, Tolstoy, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Maum ... not to mention Chinese ancient and modern writers and works, admiring myself After reading a lot of books by myself, I often show off people's controversy about realism, romanticism, absurdism, avant-garde literature ... I have also written a lot of works and submitted articles to magazines. Now I can't remember what kind of stimulus suddenly I gave up my great literary dream, and I can only be a fan of literature in my life. However, the impulse of youth was still a bit of a sequelae. It was always inexplicable to see that some of my friends became writers, and there were new works written by others, so I also had to flex my muscles to write an order for others.

After reading Brother Dingwang's collection of novels, The Hidden Door, there are more than 20 articles, which are very generous and leave a deep impression on me. The most profound of these are the following three ends.

The first is that the writer observes the characters in his pen with tender feelings and writes their stories with tender feelings. The author did not set the order and category when compiling this episode, for example, according to the time background described, or according to the identity of the character image, etc., he gave an arrangement method or order, or arranged a sequence according to the length of the novel. So I read this episode all at once, all kinds of characters come in and all kinds of plots are exciting. But it gives me the impression that the characters and their lives in the writer's pen are ordinary and trivial things that are not great, such as the skin in "The Skin", whose words and lifestyles are not lacking in vulgar and even insignificant marketplaces, but have Touching truth and chivalry. Chen Bao Tie in "Chen Bao Tie Don't Biography" is a talented and indifferent citizen. His life is a little bumpy and chaotic. He has a cunning and smart person, but also has a little bit of high and arrogant. Yi Xiaoyu, a dedicated teacher in "Intimidation", is dedicated and friendly to work and live. She could have been a role model of the times, but the noisy and chaotic life and working environment almost drowned her. She lived carefully and stingily disturbed. He and she in the "Hidden Door" walked on the edge of moral life, entangled with anxiety and emotions, and set a red line for themselves while indulging outside morality. It gives me the impression that most of the characters in the writer's life live in ordinary trivial and complicated situations. They do not live easily, but they want to live meaningfully. They are not great but they are persistent.

In observing ordinary and trivial real life and ordinary people, the writer showed a strong sense of transcendence, trying to transcend from ordinary and even mediocre trivial life, and seeing the moving truth, kindness and beauty in the dark ordinary life. Most of the characters in the novel are ordinary people at the bottom of social life. Most of their characters have some small flaws. Their lives are also full of chaos and helplessness, but they are trying hard to find clarity in the messy life. The clues are patience and help to live and work seriously. Yi Xiaoyi, Noble Books in "Intimidation", Pizi in "Pizi", and Chen Baotie, etc. The world is long, and heroes are mostly consumed by comfortable and trivial life. The lives of writers have no legends and few heroic stories. Some are trivial, ordinary and even mediocre and degenerate. People are unwilling but unable to excel, so the picture of life is dull, muddy, or noisy. Such a state of life is actually boring, but the writer Mr. Patten Wang, with great patience and delicate keen eyes, is full of tenderness and kindness to observe this ordinary life, and presents the complicated and noisy life with his tireless narrative , And let people see the flash and poetry. As he said in the interview: "Reality is the existence between two extremes, sublime and humble, longing and helplessness, sacred and mundane, happiness and suffering, and so on. Structure from any extreme or Deconstructing this world, we can all find the sadness and pleasure of life, the light and image of life, so as to provide us with a keyhole to understand the nature of the world. "It is also like the lyrics of singer Park Shu's" Ordinary Road " : "I used to cross mountains and seas, as well as mountains and seas. Everything I used to have, in a blink of an eye, I was lost, disappointed, and lost all directions, until I saw the ordinary is the only answer." I think they are just right It was my feeling after reading Mr. Dingwang's The Hidden Door.

When it comes to the skills of novels, I have always been opposed to making tricks in terms of skills and structure. The wonderful characters and stories in life are often casual and accidental, and we cannot arrange them. Even very rational people may not be able to arrange their own storyline. In this case, the narrative of the novel does not need to be clumsy in technique. Improper techniques can be counterproductive and ruin the reader's reading interest, while superb techniques are invisible, light and windy, the water is flowing, and the nature is wonderful. Mr. Patten's novels have natural narrative and exquisite structure. The "Pizi", "The Covered Door" and other articles can be said to be typical realist structural methods; the "Rapeseed Flower Yellow" and "Xu Hongjie at Dusk" use modern narrative, double-line structure, and stream of consciousness. Literary narratives; "Brothers" and "Mystery of Broken Ears" and other articles use the performance techniques of understanding constructivism. In the text of his novel, we can't see the traces of skill, and some are just a subtle fusion, a natural spread. From this we can see that Patten is familiar with the structure method and narrative skills of novels.

The language of Mr. Patten's novels is very skillful, elegant or vulgar, dense and powerful, as if rolling with the development of the plot of the novel, it feels as if the plot of the story promotes the tide of language. Sometimes it feels like the power of language engulfing the characters in the plot, and the characters are chased by the language in the story. Some chapters such as "Spring Corridor" and "Yellow Rape Flower" have this effect. The language of "Chen Baotie", "Wen You Zhang San" and "Rat Medicine" is a different style. It is quaint and calm and follows the detours of the characters. My impression is that Brother Ding Wang's temperament is not unhurried, steady and calm. He has unexpectedly controlled the speed and speed of his language. A mature novelist must have a superb ability to control language.

When I read The Hidden Door, I always remembered Mo Yan's novels, and described his chaotic and noisy life and stories in Gaomi Township, Shandong Province with stern words, scalping, nausea, vomiting, painful resentment, and pitying sympathy. ... wait, it's all about the taste. The shock of his novel art is comprehensive and diverse. Mo Yan said that he must show his compassion in the novel and it is a kind of great compassion. He must have compassion and sympathy for the good and the bad. Brother Ding Wang's novel has the same meaning as Mo Yan. His feelings for people and life have compassion, appreciation and transcendence, and they are all-round and diverse.

This is the impression and feeling after I read The Hidden Door, which is a bit abrupt, and I hope that I will not bury the light of the novel itself.
