Orhan Pamuk wrote in the book "Naive and Sentimental Novelist": "Anna Kalenina's feeling on the train is so similar to our own, but at the same time It ’s different, that ’s what fascinates us. ”In fact, many readers may not have a special experience like Anna Kalenina throughout their lives, but the reason why these readers feel“ feel so similar ”is why It is precisely the "subjective truth" in Anna Karenina. "Subjective truth" does not mean that the scenes depicted in the novel will be projected into the real life of every reader, but a "realism". "Realism" often shows the "possibility" of life, not the "inevitability".

Although the novel "Returning the Soul" is unbelievable in the direction of the story, during the reading process, we can feel enough "realism", which is mainly due to the author's effective control of logic. The novel tells the story of the prisoner Chai Ran-Deng, who was beaten to death by a prisoner in prison, and then returned to his hometown, Blizzard Village. Readers are bound to have questions in the process of reading: How does a lonely wild ghost that has been deprived of vitality "walk unhindered" in his hometown? Although the story sounds like a nightmare, Chen Yingsong uses meticulous logic Arrange to tell a very ridiculous story very convincingly. First of all, the villagers in the village lost their eyesight because they accidentally drank fake wine at the wedding dinner of the village head's son. Therefore, the main way for them to distinguish whether a firewood lamp is true or false is their voice. They cannot take a closer look at the appearance of firewood lamps. Secondly, Chai Randeng spent 20 years in prison. In these two decades, the sound and appearance of the wood-burning lamp will inevitably result in corresponding physiological changes due to the passage of time. In the end, because of its humble origins and lack of outstanding talents, Chai Randian naturally received less attention from villagers. For these reasons, after returning to the blind village, the "Dead Soul" Chai Randen did not receive much suspicion and inquiry from the villagers.

The most critical difference between a good novelist and a poor one is the narrative method. Good novelists can tell ridiculous stories very convincingly, but poor novelists often make a true story flawless. "Return of the Soul" because it has enough solid logical support points, thus providing sufficient persuasive power for readers' aesthetic acceptance. The five buckles described in the novel is a crazy image of "holding up a burning torch and speeding on the bank". He likes to hold the torch in his hand, "run in the wind, just point at something". When I first read it, I had doubts about this detail. But in the process of reading, I started to realize the importance of the details of "arson". The vast majority of the villagers in Blind Village lost their eyesight after drinking fake wine. Therefore, the act of "arson" itself seems to have the meaning of "illuminate the world"-by lighting the torch, it will illuminate the blind villagers and the blind village in the darkness.

On the other hand, "arson" corresponds to the "inner blindness" of the blind villagers. The long period of scams and intrigues made the villagers of Blizzard indifferent. For personal benefit, they can take the initiative to "blind" their hearts. As for the torch held by Wujiao, the novel states: "The torch is from Huang Blizzard, the torch passed by him to participate in the Provincial Disabled People's Games many years ago." The torch relay originated from a religion in the ancient festival of moon worship in ancient Athens The meaning of the ceremony is to commemorate the ancient Greek god Prometheus who stole the tinder for the people of the world. In the novel "Return of the Soul", the young Wukou to some extent assumes the role of Prometheus, and he needs to illuminate the "blind areas" of the villagers through the "arson" behavior again and again. However, the final fate of Wukou, which was eventually chased by the villagers of Blizzard Village, seems to be showing us the failure of "arson" from another level. This just reveals that under the dual impetus of hedonistic spirit and market cultural logic, moral ethics is forced to give way to the gradually expanding individual selfish desires, and the "Ritual and Music" has been relentlessly "silenced" by modern civilization.

Chen Yingsong, as a highly conscious contemporary writer, chose to focus his attention on the present society. For example, stories such as a middle-aged man inserting needles in the nephew's head to vent his anger, and a father giving his biological daughter to the village chief for his own self-interest have appeared in a variety of news media. We even felt “ugly fatigue” in reading these news. But when all the unseen "ugly dramas" appear in "The Return of the Soul" in a fictional form, we will still be shocked, indignant, and pained by this absurd scene of survival. I think that the author Chen Yingsong borrowed the form of "returning the soul" and wanted to pursue not only the memory of the hometown of ordinary individuals, but the truth of a country, a nation, and an era.
